There are insinuations that their co-tenants did not make any effort to rescue them when they called out for help around 11.30pm on Tuesday. The incident happened at Surulere, Lagos. Victims were Kelechi Onoja, 28, his
wife, Nkiru, 18, their first child, Favour, 20 months old, their three weeks 2nd child, Nkiru’s 80-year-old mother and 2 other family members.
Only Chidinma, 6, survived with burns injuries to her face and hands. Nkiru’s mom had visited for the Omugo rites, a popular Igbo culture of a mother nursing her daughter’s baby. She was planning to go back yesterday. It was learnt that the grandma had used a candle light to bathe the baby in the night, and forgot to put it off.
After burning out, the fire ignited the table and engulfed the room. The landlord’s grandson, Abdul Jelili, who lives opposite the apartment, said he was sleeping when he heard a noise and quickly rushed out, broke their toilet window but didn’t hear any movement. He said all the tenants in the other apartments did not come out, so he had to rush out to call for help.
Another resident, Ejike Okpara, said the neighbors didn’t help because there was animosity among the 5 tenants in the house. Kelechi, who had also woken up with other members of the family, reportedly called for help. He was said to have held tightly to the two sisters, while his wife carried their boy in her hand. They were burnt to death together.
Members of the community eventually mobilized to the scene. But the burglar-proof bars made rescue difficult. Everything was hot and untouchable. Officials of the Federal Fire Service arrived around 2am on Wednesday and saved Chidinma….. R.I.P to them……
